Review: Jesus Calling by Sarah Young

I’m a bit of a late comer to Sarah Young’s devotionals. I’m not a book reader and don’t visit the Christian bookshops here very often but recently I was struggling through some personal issues and this was recommended to me. From the Jesus Calling website bio this book as well as the other titles by Sarah Young have sold 16 million titles (including Jesus Today™, Jesus Lives™, Dear Jesus, Jesus Calling for Little Ones, Jesus Calling Bible Storybook, Jesus Calling: 365 Devotions for Kids, and Peace in His Presence and recently she has released the book ‘Jesus Always’). She doesn’t need my review in order to sell more books but I have gained so much in the short time I’ve been reading it that I can’t help but recommend it here.
This devotional is unlike anything I’ve read before. The cover is not printed in the latest trend to attract the buyer because that’s not needed for this one. Sarah writes her devotionals as if Jesus himself were speaking. For example, today’s devotional reads,

‘I AM INVOLVED in each moment of your life. I have carefully mapped out every inch of your journey through this day, even though much of it may feel haphazard. Because the world is in a fallen condition, things always seem to be unraveling around the edges. Expect to find trouble in this day. At the same time, trust that My way is perfect, even in the midst of such messy imperfection.’ (Jesus Calling, June 1).

Before I made any purchase I was recommended the Jesus Calling Facebook page which sends a different devotional quote into your stream each day. These seem to be different to the ones in the book. If you don’t want to purchase the devotional book itself I would definitely recommend clicking ‘like’ on that page as each devotional hits straight to the heart.

In the end I decided that I was more likely to read the daily devotional if I purchased it in the flip calendar style (called a brightener). This sits at my desk and it only takes a few minutes to read and there are verses at the bottom of the page if you want to look them up.
Devotionals are ‘dime a dozen’ and it can be hard to know if you can trust the content. I have found Sarah’s writing to be Biblically sound and extremely grounding. What she has written for each day is both basic and deep at the same time. I would highly recommend this particular devotional and thank you Lisa for recommending it.
(PS. I have also started the thankfulness journal you recommended and its been equally as helpful).

  1. Thanks for this review Amanda! I’ve started this devotional a few times but never continued. I will pick up my book today and start as I certainly need the comfort that its words deliver!
