As I mentioned previously I painted a special painting for my Mum’s 60th and took it with me up to Cairns earlier last month. I really enjoyed the process of creating this painting. I took a few photos along the way but could only find a few of them.
I chose a photo to paint from this time, I must admit, I’m not that great in painting from real life with people. I don’t have the opportunity that often which might be why I’m not that great. I can however paint anything from a photo. I chose this image of my Mum at the piano with my girls. I loved the intimacy of the moment as she shared her love of piano with them.
You can see it in the image above (with lines drawn on it!). I loved remembering old techniques to get the mood and tone I was after and I carefully chose my palette so as to not overwhelm the painting.
I added the picture frame on top of the piano for two reasons. Firstly, I wanted to include the rest of the family and the photo in the frame is a whole family shot. Secondly, I needed to balance the painting out and give the piano some depth of field.
Here you can see my setup in my studio. I love my little space!
Here is the finished painting after Dad hung it in their home. I like how it turned out and its inspired me to attempt something bigger for our own home.
As you can see it sits right next to the piano where the original photo was taken. I love the he put it right there as it tells the story of that space. I’m looking forward to doing some more paintings in this space and find myself thinking more about painting than I have in the past.
