Exhibition Entry

For the first time since uni I have painted something specifically for an exhibition. I need to be painting more but this one took quite a while and I really enjoyed the challenge. The exhibition will be at Metrochurch in the city (details to come later) in the next few months and I’m excited about it! Here’s my painting:

This was very difficult to get a good shot of, for some reason his hand looks smaller in this photo but not in real life, might be the angle. Here are the details:

Title: ‘Baldo, o yari, Baldo, he drinks’
60cm x 75cm, Acrylic on Canvas

His smile is what caught my attention back in 2001 when we visited the village of Say (sigh) in Niger, West Africa. Its only recently that I discovered his name is Baldo. Baldo was the only Christian in the village at the time and it radiated from his face.

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:13-14

Popped this in the post the other day so I’ve officially entered! How exciting!

Returning to the Beginning

For a while now I’ve not felt myself. As you may have picked up over the last few months I’ve been under a bit of stress. Some of the outcome of this has been mental and some physical and I cannot deny, some of it spiritual. Damage was done, some may be permanent at least in the physical area but I’ve started climbing back up the mountain and dealing with the mental and spiritual damage. Of course I’m not totally there yet, thats going to take a long time and as I trust that God is the great physician I know healing will happen. Forgiveness will happen too and I do think its starting, slowly.

One of the main stresses over these last six months was that my hubby didn’t have a job. It was tough watching him as he struggled with many things but last week the Lord gave him a job that can only be from him. He is now a school Chaplain at my daughter’s school. Its most exciting really as there is no denying that this was completely God directed. As the stress of unemployment was lifted so was that ‘wilderness wandering’ feeling for both of us but I was left with the physical results of the last year. Since he started his new job I’ve found myself to be obsessing even more over symptoms, as if my brain is scrambling to catch up to where my hubby is. Still struggling physically makes me feel as if I’m dragging the stresses with me into this new phase of our lives. I am making distinctive and purposeful moves to resolve these issues.

One of the moves I’m making involves figuring out how to reconnect with my creativity. That was one of the first things to be effected during the period of chronic stress and without it I don’t feel like myself. Sure, I’ve still done a tiny bit but mostly it was mechanical, to distract me and keep my hands busy. My hands were involved but my mind was not.

I did a bit of a search on the net for ideas on creativity inspiration techniques and found two very helpful articles. This is one and this is the other. This morning I made moves to step towards some of these suggestions. The first thing I did was get my whiteboard down off the wall and erase it clean. Then I wrote out many of the tips from the first article and hung it on my wall, next to my art area.

I then scoured the list and chose one area to work on, combining the idea of having a topic and using a mind map (from the second article). I thought about the words that have followed me throughout the last 12 months and started:

Trust was the first word that came to mind. I blogged about how this was the word I returned from our trip over east with earlier this year so it was an easy choice. I have also done one using the word ‘new’, this seemed appropriate to starting fresh and also works in perfectly with the way that the Lord drew me to consider the butterfly while we were away (as mentioned in the same post). Its a start anyway and from it I’m hoping to keep on working until some ideas for artwork come through.

Revelation 21:5
“And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.”

I set up my art area yesterday too and have a blank canvas sitting there ready for when inspiration strikes and I have also added the two words to my drafting board to remind me of God’s goodness and to inspire me!

The third photo shows my inspirational collection from nature including seeds, feathers and pictures of butterflies.

Its Finally here!

For the last three years I’ve been biding my time in order to set up an art space in our little house. I had to wait until my youngest was in a full size bed before I could make the space to set this area up. The amazing thing was that I was able to get hold of a free drafting table (via freecycle) and I love it. It may be old and clunky but it was free and its mine! It turns out the the Pieffe brand is one of the best and this one is regarded as vintage. I wrote to the manufacturer in Europe and they were very helpful asking for photos and giving me the information they have.

I am pretty happy with this setup. I’m using my Grandmother’s stool and my Grandfathers projector stand (to put my brushes etc on) and when the curtain is drawn there is a ton on natural light. At night I have the IKEA lamp over the top. Now all I have to do is actually get to work!

Photo of the Day – Nov 15

This is my photo of the day but I’m going to combine this with Childhood101‘s We Play ready for tomorrow. This afternoon Miss K insisted that we paint so I put my thinking cap on for something that wouldn’t involve me getting out the acrylic poster paints. Food colouring was what I decided on. We have done this before and ended up with a bit of a disaster but thankfully this time Little L is a bit older and happier to sit still for longer.

It was a simple exercise in colour mixing (Miss K remembered that blue and red make purple and that yellow and blue make green so I was impressed) and just splashing around (or eating in Little L’s case) coloured water. So, here are the rest of the photos of today’s adventure:

Photo of the Day – Oct 21

Paint. This is something I’d like to see more often in my art room and if I can get my head around what to paint then hopefully this will happen. I also should remember to wash out my paint trays after finishing! I don’t usually use these sorts of paint trays, I prefer flat glass or a plate but this was the closest thing at hand when I needed to paint recently. Watch this space!! (but you can take your eyes off and get a cup of tea or two because it might be a while).

Photo of the Day – Oct 6

Today I got the acrylics out and started a painting for a friend. Its for a book cover (it may or may not be used) and its been good to get back into it. This is the first painting I’ve done in my new little room and it was sooooo nice to be able to leave my easel up and paints out and just shut the door. Thats something I haven’t done in a while. I can’t show you the actual painting so you get to see some of my supplies in action instead!

WWL time again. Last week was really nice. I had a couple of great surprises including being interviewed by moleskinerie and winning a little facebook comp for a years subscription to Offspring Magazine. I had a couple of friends visit for morning tea and we went out to another friend’s place for lunch one day. We got lots of things done in the garden and added to our bird family. So, in-between all that, lets see how I did with the list;

It was raining all week so the girls and I did things inside apart from our seed planting. Oh well, some weeks you are spontaneous, another week you’re not!

Oil Painting – figures

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned an under-painting I did in preparation for a new painting (shown above). All of these are for practicing my oil painting as I try to remember how to use this medium.

Last night I got the paints out again and worked on this painting. Here it is half way (with no eyes!):

Then here it is about 80% finished. I need to let it dry and then make some adjustments to her face.

a closeup:

I’m quite pleased with how its going so far and like the skin tones and background colour. I’ve prepared another canvas for next time:

So far I think I’m getting the knack of it again. i really enjoyed this one, figures has always been one of my favourite things to do.

So far the shop has just cards but hopefully I will be able to put together some A4 sized prints soon. To visit KeLu go here:
