The First Oil Painting

The other day I was taking a little trip down memory lane and looking through my art folder (which had been in the shed for a while). Some of the paintings have some mold on them which is a shame but luckily nothing that was really ‘good’ was in there, those had been stored inside. In amongst the paintings I found this one. Let me explain. This was the very first oil painting I did. It was done around 1996/97 before I’d done any art serious art training.

If you look closely you can see what looks like ‘acne’ on her face, in fact that the previous layer of painting underneath. One thing you learn in art school is not to paint over an old painting as parts of the previous one will always show through. I suppose I both didn’t know that and didn’t care at the time. This took five goes for me to be happy with it. Of course its a pretty awful painting but I believe in remembering where you started, hence the reason I’ve kept it (and also the reason I’ve not hung it up in my house….ever).

My philosophy is usually not to start at the beginning of things but to dive in, head first and try the hardest thing I can think of. At the time I figured that was an oil painting portrait. Now days I find oil painting and portraits only a little challenging but not quite as challenging as this one was.

I should explain too, this is Ivy. She is a relative of mine on my Mum’s side and I have always been fascinated with photos of her. She seemed to have a lot of fun, always dressing up in costumes and mucking around in photos. She was probably quite the character. I’ve painted her one other time, also around the same time but this time in watercolour. I must say that the watercolour attempt was easier and much more successful (if I can find a copy of it on my computer I’ll put it up). I might share some of the other paintings I found in the art folder soon too.

New Designs

These last two weeks I have been working on adding to my print and paper shop KeLu. I’ve added quite a few cards with the aim of adding more very soon. Here’s a selection of what can be found in the shop:

Its Finally here!

For the last three years I’ve been biding my time in order to set up an art space in our little house. I had to wait until my youngest was in a full size bed before I could make the space to set this area up. The amazing thing was that I was able to get hold of a free drafting table (via freecycle) and I love it. It may be old and clunky but it was free and its mine! It turns out the the Pieffe brand is one of the best and this one is regarded as vintage. I wrote to the manufacturer in Europe and they were very helpful asking for photos and giving me the information they have.

I am pretty happy with this setup. I’m using my Grandmother’s stool and my Grandfathers projector stand (to put my brushes etc on) and when the curtain is drawn there is a ton on natural light. At night I have the IKEA lamp over the top. Now all I have to do is actually get to work!

My Print and Paper store

I’ve mentioned that I have a print and paper store on Etsy before but I thought I’d mention it again. The store is called KeLu and currently I have a selection of cards, wrapping paper and postcards for sale in there. I have some A5 size prints that will be done soon and I am hoping they will be available sooner rather than later. These prints will be of my line drawings enlarged and then painted back into. The cards I have in the shop have been created using my line drawings also but using different methods. There are three methods that I’ve used so far:

- Gocco printing
- Hand carving stamps (using my own designs) and then hand stamping
- Watercolour painting onto black and white line drawings (all African scenes from our time in Niger, West Africa with SIM)

Here is a mosaic of some of the images you will find in my store. You can visit KeLu by clicking here. You can also find KeLu on facebook. I am also on twitter, follow PaintPrintClay.

Thankful For Dishes

This is the title of the new book by my friend Narelle Nettelbeck. She has written her second devotional book and you can purchase it either through her directly or via Koorong. I was very pleased to be able to paint the cover for her book, what a privilege to have my name attached to hers! This is the first time my artwork has been used for a book cover.

I did the painting last Sept/Oct and the book was added to the shelves of Koorong only a week or so ago. She will be having a book launch soon.

This is the original acrylic painting

Narelle’s first book is available through her blog (there is a link on my sidebar). Narelle writes honestly and with compassion for Mums who are facing issues that we all often struggle with every day in the Christian life. She describes her book as ‘a collection of 100 daily and personal devotions designed for Mums everywhere’.

Her devotionals are divided into the following sections:

Godly Living
Life In Christ
Special Occasions and Holidays
Living Life With Children
Bible Characters
Relationships
Marriage
Encouragements for Mum

I would highly recommend this devotional as a gift for a new Mum, an older Mum or what about for Mother’s Day this year?

New Artwork

I know I’m not blogging much. I’ve not been doing Friday Focus or even Music Monday. Thats ok for now, I’ve had too much on my mind to work though and none of it is the sort of thing I would like to put on a public blog. I can say that I’m getting there though and that I’m learning a lot of life lessons about things such as stress, anxiety, depression and how the brain works. As time goes on I have both large open spaces in my day where I don’t know what to do and times where my brain won’t stop. Much of this is related to the fact that we still don’t know what we will be doing this year. Its been three months since my hubby resigned and we are both slowly (imagine extreme slow-mo) climbing out of the effects of that.

One area that has been severely sapped is my creative energy. I always find that when I am on edge, tense, stressed or distracted I just can’t be creative. I have been advised to put the energy that is produced from that state of mind into artwork but either it doesn’t work for me or I’m not at that stage yet. However, I am trying to find other ways to keep the ball rolling. I have been photographing as much of my current ‘stock’ of hand made things (polymer clay) as possible and listing them. I did this at a good pace when we first returned from Cairns but then I got hardly a sale and have been discouraged. I do however keep on advertising on twitter and facebook.

I haven’t been sketching as such but I do have several moleskines full of artwork that I have always planned on turning into prints and I’ve made steps towards that. I figure that this way I don’t have to be creative as such but I can talk to the printer (an old family friend) and get some prices. the pic below shows some of the samples he has done for me to play with. When I am happy that the paper will take the paint I’m planning to apply then he will print me up some more and I can start listing them for sale. The day that happens will be an important day for me. Ever since I finished art school back in 2004 I’ve always planned on selling my art somehow. I know the clay and the other things I have in KeLu are art but selling prints is my goal.

So, I’m not sure how often I’ll be blogging right now. I’m doing a lot of listening to God through reading his Word, Christian music and podcasts and he is teaching me new things each week. I’m seriously considering starting up the photo a day again as from March 1, just to give me a reason to blog without worrying if its worth reading. Here’s the artwork before I paint back into it (planning on selling black and white line drawing versions too):

Photo of the Day – November 29

Miss K went to a birthday party last weekend and the invitation had spiderman on it. She decided to make a card for the birthday boy by copying the picture. I thought this was pretty good for a 5 yr old!

I love that she loves to draw and that she does so freehand. Give her a colouring in book and she’ll colour the pictures but usually add to them. I’ve always been a bit reluctant to give colouring in books, I’d prefer that she went freehand and draws what she sees. She seems to enjoy freehand drawing much more anyway. Go Miss K!

Photo of the Day – Nov 15

This is my photo of the day but I’m going to combine this with Childhood101‘s We Play ready for tomorrow. This afternoon Miss K insisted that we paint so I put my thinking cap on for something that wouldn’t involve me getting out the acrylic poster paints. Food colouring was what I decided on. We have done this before and ended up with a bit of a disaster but thankfully this time Little L is a bit older and happier to sit still for longer.

It was a simple exercise in colour mixing (Miss K remembered that blue and red make purple and that yellow and blue make green so I was impressed) and just splashing around (or eating in Little L’s case) coloured water. So, here are the rest of the photos of today’s adventure:

Paint. This is something I’d like to see more often in my art room and if I can get my head around what to paint then hopefully this will happen. I also should remember to wash out my paint trays after finishing! I don’t usually use these sorts of paint trays, I prefer flat glass or a plate but this was the closest thing at hand when I needed to paint recently. Watch this space!! (but you can take your eyes off and get a cup of tea or two because it might be a while).

Miss K was given this plaster set to paint for her birthday from my friend Karen. We’d done some similar plaster setting and painting earlier so this time she knew what to do . I think her favourite part is mixing the paint, I have taught her a bit about what colours to mix so she loves to make pink or purple or orange. She’s such a tactile kid, loves to put the paint on her hands and feel it between her fingers. I wonder who she’s taking after?
