The week of Madness and Fun

Hello! I’m still here although I’m a bit worn out at this end of the week. The main reason I haven’t blogged is the same as lot of busy Aussie Mums at this time of year, its the school holidays, well in WA it is anyway, many other states are finished their break and are already into term 4. We still have one week of holidays and can I tell you, we need it!! Here’s what we did this week, madness I tell you!

Sun – church (am), Hubby and I attended the opening of the Metrochurch Art Awards where I have entered my painting. I had zero expectations to win anything as it was my first exhibition entry in a very long time. The awards were very well done and the winner was very deserving. My only disappointment was where my painting was hung. It was as if the curator just didn’t know where to put mine so it was up the back, in a corner which isn’t ideal for a portrait. I also think it was placed amongst a lot of student work.

Mon - knowing the crazy week ahead we stayed home but the first half of the morning was all about painting and playdough. Not just any painting though, Miss K wanted to paint on canvas so I gave her a few to try out, one bigger one and two little ones. I’ll share the finished products a little later but here she is hard at work:

We then did a fair bit of cooking knowning we’d need snacks for the car and train trips we were going to take later in the week:

We made choccy bikkies, cheese sticks and pumpkin soup.

Tues – We all got in the car and drove about two hours to a town called Williams where my hubby’s Chaplaincy mentor lives. I’ll share pics from that later. Its wildflower season here in Western Australia so it was a very pretty ride:

Wed - The girls went to their Grandparents, I worked on a polymer clay order and hubby had Chaplaincy meetings and work to do! Then, later in the arvo, once the girls were back my cousin came around and took some photos of the girls. He runs a fantastic wedding and portrait photography business.

Thurs - Off we went to the Royal Show. Originally we weren’t going at all and then I won an adult ticket through our local paper. When we went to pick it up the lady gave us a second ticket so we all got in for free! Yay! Again, will blog properly later but heres a couple of pics:

The girls on their first ever show ride.

Fri
- The final day of rushing and madness, we went to a Colin Buchanan concert at Koorong. The concert was great but getting there was not so great. I decided to take the stroller even though little L is already 3 because she tends to be a bit of a runner. I decided I needed a way to restrain her, especially seeing as it was just myself and the girls. Pushing a 3 yr old in a stroller up and down ramps and hills is no fun I tell you.

Our bus was late so we missed the first train and then I couldn’t work out how to get to Koorong from the train station. By the time we got to Koorong I was puffing and hot and so were the girls and then they told me I had to go all the way around the other side of the building. Needless to say, I wasn’t feeling all that ‘godly’ by the time we sat down (right up the back of course due to being late) but it didn’t take long for Colin’s songs to penetrate and I was relaxed.

The girls had fun and really enjoyed the songs. Miss K wanted the CD but we’ve put that down for a Christmas present. My major disappointment was that Colin didn’t hang around afterwards to have photos or sign anything, he just disappeared from the stage and that was it. Here’s some pics:

One of Colin’s characters

After that we trained back to the city and I grabbed some lunch and some ice cream for the girls. We had a bit of a wander while waiting for hubby to pick us up (he was working in the city for the day). We went and had a look at the new cactus sculpture in Forrest Place:

The girls were so good for me in the city!

Today we are recuperating from our mad week and I’m catching up on a weeks washing, more than usual seeing as Miss K wore normal clothes this week instead of a uniform. The following week will be full of playing with new toys from the show and Miss K’s recent birthday, working outside, clearing out the shed and other bits n pieces.

How’s your school holidays going?

An Old Treasure

I used to have a sausage dog. She was sweet, smart and naughty. Everyone loved her and everyone seemed, in some way to be part owner. When she died many of my friends came around to say goodbye. That was six years ago now and she was 15. This is her as I etched her back in 2003, she looks like a puppy here but she’s actually about 12 years old. I found this when I was digging through some books the other day. She was my baby until I had my first baby. Her name was Shana (banana) or babygirl and she knew the meaning of over 50 words. I miss her.

I did the same etch in a darker colour:

Miss K’s Artwork

I’m so proud of Miss K, she is getting so great at drawing and putting her ideas on paper. These are some of the pictures she’s brought home from school lately. She’s nearly 6 and I think these are just fantastic! (I could be a little biased though):

My Other Blog

Recently I started a second blog which is focusing on creativity in our every day lives. Eventually I am aiming to offer advertising or sponsorship options on the blog but for now I’m building it up and enjoying the creative thinking its spurring in me. Some topics I’ve covered so far include:

- Making Hair Interesting
- Scribbing
- Noticing The Detail

….and a lot more.

If you have a minute, pop on over to take a peek (click on the pic below):

Exhibition Entry

For the first time since uni I have painted something specifically for an exhibition. I need to be painting more but this one took quite a while and I really enjoyed the challenge. The exhibition will be at Metrochurch in the city (details to come later) in the next few months and I’m excited about it! Here’s my painting:

This was very difficult to get a good shot of, for some reason his hand looks smaller in this photo but not in real life, might be the angle. Here are the details:

Title: ‘Baldo, o yari, Baldo, he drinks’
60cm x 75cm, Acrylic on Canvas

His smile is what caught my attention back in 2001 when we visited the village of Say (sigh) in Niger, West Africa. Its only recently that I discovered his name is Baldo. Baldo was the only Christian in the village at the time and it radiated from his face.

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:13-14

Popped this in the post the other day so I’ve officially entered! How exciting!

Painting in a Specific Space

As I have mentioned before, I recently set up my art space. I decided to set up a specific area in the room for the girls to paint, draw or playdough in too. The idea being that they can watch me and learn and we can be together in the same room. The girls love it, they just come in and sit next to me and start an activity unless its something like this where I need to do some setup.

As you can see, Little L loves the space and recently she’s requested to paint more often. I like having them next to me as the computer is close to them too and I can help out as well as get on with other tasks. Great fun!

Returning to the Beginning

For a while now I’ve not felt myself. As you may have picked up over the last few months I’ve been under a bit of stress. Some of the outcome of this has been mental and some physical and I cannot deny, some of it spiritual. Damage was done, some may be permanent at least in the physical area but I’ve started climbing back up the mountain and dealing with the mental and spiritual damage. Of course I’m not totally there yet, thats going to take a long time and as I trust that God is the great physician I know healing will happen. Forgiveness will happen too and I do think its starting, slowly.

One of the main stresses over these last six months was that my hubby didn’t have a job. It was tough watching him as he struggled with many things but last week the Lord gave him a job that can only be from him. He is now a school Chaplain at my daughter’s school. Its most exciting really as there is no denying that this was completely God directed. As the stress of unemployment was lifted so was that ‘wilderness wandering’ feeling for both of us but I was left with the physical results of the last year. Since he started his new job I’ve found myself to be obsessing even more over symptoms, as if my brain is scrambling to catch up to where my hubby is. Still struggling physically makes me feel as if I’m dragging the stresses with me into this new phase of our lives. I am making distinctive and purposeful moves to resolve these issues.

One of the moves I’m making involves figuring out how to reconnect with my creativity. That was one of the first things to be effected during the period of chronic stress and without it I don’t feel like myself. Sure, I’ve still done a tiny bit but mostly it was mechanical, to distract me and keep my hands busy. My hands were involved but my mind was not.

I did a bit of a search on the net for ideas on creativity inspiration techniques and found two very helpful articles. This is one and this is the other. This morning I made moves to step towards some of these suggestions. The first thing I did was get my whiteboard down off the wall and erase it clean. Then I wrote out many of the tips from the first article and hung it on my wall, next to my art area.

I then scoured the list and chose one area to work on, combining the idea of having a topic and using a mind map (from the second article). I thought about the words that have followed me throughout the last 12 months and started:

Trust was the first word that came to mind. I blogged about how this was the word I returned from our trip over east with earlier this year so it was an easy choice. I have also done one using the word ‘new’, this seemed appropriate to starting fresh and also works in perfectly with the way that the Lord drew me to consider the butterfly while we were away (as mentioned in the same post). Its a start anyway and from it I’m hoping to keep on working until some ideas for artwork come through.

Revelation 21:5
“And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.”

I set up my art area yesterday too and have a blank canvas sitting there ready for when inspiration strikes and I have also added the two words to my drafting board to remind me of God’s goodness and to inspire me!

The third photo shows my inspirational collection from nature including seeds, feathers and pictures of butterflies.

More Art from the Archives

The other day I mentioned my first ever oil painting and how I’d found a pile of my old artwork in my stored away art bag. I thought I’d show some of the other art that I found in there. I look at it all now and wonder if I’d ever be able to get to that stage again with painting and drawing. I’m sure I could with practice, if only I could figure out where I put my motivation. Here they are (click on them for a slightly larger image):

The First Oil Painting

The other day I was taking a little trip down memory lane and looking through my art folder (which had been in the shed for a while). Some of the paintings have some mold on them which is a shame but luckily nothing that was really ‘good’ was in there, those had been stored inside. In amongst the paintings I found this one. Let me explain. This was the very first oil painting I did. It was done around 1996/97 before I’d done any art serious art training.

If you look closely you can see what looks like ‘acne’ on her face, in fact that the previous layer of painting underneath. One thing you learn in art school is not to paint over an old painting as parts of the previous one will always show through. I suppose I both didn’t know that and didn’t care at the time. This took five goes for me to be happy with it. Of course its a pretty awful painting but I believe in remembering where you started, hence the reason I’ve kept it (and also the reason I’ve not hung it up in my house….ever).

My philosophy is usually not to start at the beginning of things but to dive in, head first and try the hardest thing I can think of. At the time I figured that was an oil painting portrait. Now days I find oil painting and portraits only a little challenging but not quite as challenging as this one was.

I should explain too, this is Ivy. She is a relative of mine on my Mum’s side and I have always been fascinated with photos of her. She seemed to have a lot of fun, always dressing up in costumes and mucking around in photos. She was probably quite the character. I’ve painted her one other time, also around the same time but this time in watercolour. I must say that the watercolour attempt was easier and much more successful (if I can find a copy of it on my computer I’ll put it up). I might share some of the other paintings I found in the art folder soon too.

New Designs

These last two weeks I have been working on adding to my print and paper shop KeLu. I’ve added quite a few cards with the aim of adding more very soon. Here’s a selection of what can be found in the shop:
