Creativity at last!

In the last few days I’ve had three separate orders so I’ve been busy. Its so nice to have a custom order and get back into claying again, even if I’m juggling things between two kids. The exciting thing is that these sales will be enough to train two Malawi pastor’s in AIDS and HIV knowledge.

On top of this, I feel as if I’m back in the saddle as far as creativity with K. She sat at the table for a bit and played with her playdough today while I polyclayed. That was fun!

So, here’s my bit of creativity for this week so far:

I wasn’t the only one being creative in our house today. Michael got very clever with Kezi’s lunch and she quite enjoyed eating it too!

Africa

Africa got into our blood after spending just one year there in 2000-2001 so its appropriate that our house reflects this. That year was a turning point for us. We both feel that it was at that point that we found where God wanted us for the long term, working in some capacity with overseas missions, specifically with SIM. Now, close to 10 years since our first association with SIM (April 1999) we are still involved and at an even higher capacity than ever before (Michael is the WA Ministry Director). I think that this is why we still have our African memorabilia out, it was a significant watershed moment for us.

As I’ve slowly been regaining my ability to move freely (don’t worry, I haven’t been lifting anything!) as well as losing my pregnancy brain I have been rearranging things in our new house little by little. We decided to go with an African theme for our lounge space and its coming together slowly, although, due to Ikea being short on the specific furniture items we need to make our space livable, its still in temporary mode! Small parts are complete though like these:

m_img_0973.jpg
Entry table, complete with a beautiful bunch of flowers sent from our SIM office (I realise that my painting is crooked! There’s a mirror behind the table too that will be on the wall at some point).

m_img_0975.jpg
The wall hanging that my Mum made for me with the African theme. She designed this herself, amazing isn’t it! (the orange is not as bright as the picture shows!)

m_img_0979.jpg

m_img_0983.jpg
Some of my own paintings around the place. (also, not as dark as the photo shows, sometime I’ll take a proper photo of that)

m_img_0989.jpg
The top of the china cabinet

m_img_0986.jpg
Oh and baby cards!!

Now we just need to finish off the lounge area after a trip to Ikea sometime this week and things will feel more settled. Its so nice to be able to move around without discomfort!!

SIM Project for July and August

As promised in the previous post, here is the project that the sales from July and August will go towards. After asking from direction from above and searching through many projects I’ve settled on this one.

Malawi Church Leaders HIV & AIDS Training (96352)

The link above will give you a lot more information about this project but a quote from the page says:

m_malawi-pastors.jpg

The church is reaching out to many of the poorest people in Malawi. Church members struggle to put food on the table and only have small offerings to pay the pastors. Despite small economic resources, the churches are pouring themselves out in response to the AIDS crisis which is devastating families and entire villages. These pastors continue to minister in these tough conditions because they love God and their fellow Malawians….

About US $3600 can bring 90 pastors and their wives from all over Malawi to stay at the Bible College in Blantyre for four days. This is only US $10 per person per day for this important time of training, equipping and encouraging. Would you consider giving US $40 to train one pastor? This gift will have an eternal impact and bring a smile to even more faces! Thank you for your partnership to strengthen the church in Malawi!

You can watch a video on the work of HOPE for AIDS in Malawi here.

SIM Money for Bikes

The money from all my sales is still going to the work of SIM each month. As I’ve mentioned before, the money for the months of May and June goes towards Bikes for Pastors in Ghana, Africa.. With just a couple of weeks left in June I thought I would mention this again.

I fully believe that God is in control of my sales and interestingly I had more sales in May than I have ever had before followed by a total of zero sales in June. The timing of this is amazing as June has been crazily busy with moving house and trying to prepare for our new baby.

The last sale I had was May 30th, we moved June 2nd. Interesting.

The total of sales so far for these two months is $US331.50. If I do sell anything over the next week and a half I have managed to find places for my creations and also the packaging I would need to post them so it wouldn’t be too much of a hassle. Custom orders however won’t be accepted for quite a while.

So, what does $331.50 buy for the Pastors in Ghana? It buys 5 and a half bikes for them!! Wouldn’t it be great to make it to a total of 6 bikes? If you are intending to purchase anything from one of my online shops, now is the time! Just $30US more in sales will complete the aim.

As a tempter, here’s a couple of the items found in my Etsy shop:

Sales for May and June – Calling all Cyclists!

After having a look around the SIM Projects website I have found the project that the Polyclarific profits will be going to for the next two months.

Are you a cyclist? Do you own a bike? Do your kids own a bike, maybe everyone in the family has one? In parts of Africa a bike is something that is out of reach for most. These people get around on foot and are used to travelling long distances along dusty paths. In the country of Ghana SIM has a project (#94020) where around $60US will buy a bike for a Pastor, allowing them to visit those who are needy much faster. The details from the SIM information page are as follows:

jacob-bike-2.jpg

In Northern Ghana, dedicated pastors and evangelists bring new meaning to the scripture verse, “how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.” Because villages are spread out, they must walk considerable distances in order to minister or meet together with other church leaders. Pastor Jacob Wesong walked 4 to 5 hours each way in order to attend meetings with other church leaders.

The Bicycles for Evangelists Project is changing things for Jacob and many others. Instead of tiring by traveling on foot, riding a bicycle cuts travel time and fatigue in half. Now there is more time for pastoring and bringing the Good News of Christ to others. Many leaders who have received bicycles have seen their ministry expand. Not only are they able to visit and minister in outlying areas, they are able to meet other community needs such as transporting the sick to medical clinics.

This vital project is enabling outlying areas to be reached. Evangelists are bringing Christ’s love to those who have never heard, and pastors are visiting and encouraging small, isolated fellowships that they would not have been able to reach on foot.

I hope to make enough sales over the next two months to buy at least four bicycles for four needy Pastors in Ghana. A reminder that Mother’s Day is coming up, maybe you will find something in one of my stores that would be lovely for your Mum. Here are the links once again:

Galmi

nigerinafricaworldgazatteer_165c.gif

Out in the bush in Niger (west Africa) is a place called Galmi and SIM has a hospital there. We visited Galmi and stayed on the hospital compound in 2001 for the national life conference that SIM holds every year.

The trip out there was very bumpy, the potholes were often over a metre wide and much of the time we drove off road (alongside the main road on the dirt). Driving through Africa you are sure to see some interesting sights such as these:

m_cart-with-donkey-and-hay.jpg
m_mat-seller-road-to-galmi.jpg

The hospital itself is nothing like our hospitals here in Australia. Entering the building for a tour isn’t something you do if you have a weak stomach.

Here’s my friend Janella and I outside the front gate:
m_galmi-gate.jpg

and a mother with her sick baby:
m_galmi-lady-with-sick-baby.jpg

as you can see, I will never complain about waiting rooms at the doctors here in Australia again from the waiting room there (which is fairly standard I was told):
m_galmi-waiting-room.jpg

Why the nostalgic post about somewhere I visited over 6 years ago? Because a friend of ours who worked in Niger while we were there has been working on a website for Galmi and its gone live recently. The website is:

Galmi Hospital

This is one of their photos from the site. It reminds me of something our missionary tour guide told us while there, that one of the most common injuries at the time was from Fulani men who had fallen out of a tree and hurt their foot. They were trying to collect food for their herd and often would walk on the injured foot for days before treatment.

If you have a minute, please have a look at their site. Feel free to leave comments on what you think of it here and I’ll pass them on to our friend.

Photo Friday – Travel

I haven’t entered photo friday in quite a while but this weeks theme is ‘Travel’ and seeing as its a favourite passtime of mine (and one I haven’t been able to do much lately) I had to enter. Here’s my pic

SIM Highlight

m_red-sim-logo.jpg

Its been a while since I’ve done a highlight of the mission we work for – SIM. Recently the International SIM site has had an overhaul and it looks great! You can see what it looks like by clicking here:

SIM International

I really like the way the site looks and that you can see the different parts of the world that the mission works in right away.

You might ask who SIM is. Firstly, SIM is the former Sudan Interior Mission, the initials now stand for Serving In Mission. You can read SIM’s purpose statement here.

SIM works in just over 40 countries around the world in many different fields. Some of those fields include Bible work, Medical work, Education, Health awareness, Prison work, HIV and AIDS work and more.

Our involvment in SIM is that Michael is the Western Australian Ministry Director and I help him for a day or so a week, depending on the week. We assist those in WA who want to go overseas with the mission as well as representing it at various events and churches.

SIM Australia has their own website too so feel free to take a peek at that. You can see it here:

Niger

I’m enjoying playing around with this mosaic maker from flickr’s big huge labs. I thought I’d share this one that I did. Its a mosaic of some photos taken while we were in Niger with SIM in 2001. There were a few pics of some paintings I did in the flickr folder I used too so they are here as well!

Sahel Academy Niger

As regular readers know, Michael and I spent a year at Sahel Academy in Niger from June 2000 to June 2001. We have kept in contact with several Sahelians since then and take an active interest in how the school develops. We are also concerned about their annual need for Christian missionary teachers. I have just found this short video on Google Video that Sahel has put together. It shows the school, the teachers, students and dorm life, please take a few minutes to have a peek. I will be linking to different short videos that SIM has on YouTube from time to time.
