Photo of the Day – Jan 31

I seem to be only putting up photos of the day lately instead of posting properly. Ah well! This was last night’s moon, very yellow and low:

Ahhh, don’t toddlers have it good. I’m not sure about sleeping this way though, looks really uncomfortable! I am really looking forward to not having to take a stroller with me everywhere but at the same time its kinda handy to hang stuff off. At least we are past the pram stage, that thing was a monster to get around some places. You can see how hard it could be at times in this post and also in this post. Not to mention this post about the joys of Pramming. Ah well, I suppose I will miss it all when they are both walking around…..or maybe not.

We went into Perth city yesterday and took the girls to an event at the Art Gallery and I took a few snaps of our hot city. Hot because it really is very hot at the moment, 38C today (100F). I played around a bit with it on Picasa and this what I ended up with:

Never Throw Away Scrap Clay Ok

Early on as I learnt to work with polymer clay I learnt to never throw away any clay, no matter how muddy it got after too much mixing. It can be used for a number of things including the inside of beads or the like. Recently I ended up with a large pile of scrap clay and learnt a lesson in the process.

You see I have my items listed in various places and sometimes sell them in person. When this happens I have to remember to remove them from my on-line stores as most things cannot be repeated. Late last year I sold this necklace:

This wasn’t what I would class as a difficult pendant to create but it is what you would call difficult to ‘recreate’. Well, what did I do….forgot to remove it from my Etsy store and of course, after it sitting in my store for a very long time, it sold….for the second time. Big boo boo there.

I wrote to the buyer and explained what had happened and she asked if I could make her another one as it matched her dress perfectly and silly me said ‘yes, no problem’. I’m not sure what compelled me to say yes, maybe the madness of the moment with getting a sale. The technique to get the graduation of colour involved putting two different coloured clays through a pasta machine many many times and to match the exact green and blue was going to be a challenge. After three goes at this I ended up with these options for my buyer:

As you can see they are not really like the original but she was quite happy with one of them and I completed the order. This left me with a lot of scrap clay and so I needed to make something sell-able out of it. Here’s some of what I came up with:

greenstripes

rolls

greensquares

Hopefully these colours will suit someone and they will snatch them up when I eventually get around to listing them. The rolls will become earrings and the squares will become pendants.

So, lesson learnt. ALWAYS remember to remove sold items from on-line stores and be prepared to say NO when you should. Hopefully I’ll remember this.

How could I go past a photo of a gorgeous kookaburra on Aussie Day! This fella was photographed in the NSW National Park. Theres nothing like the sound of a kookaburra to remind you where you live.

Happy Aussie Day

roo

Just wanted to say happy Australia Day to everyone. Aussies are not known for being quite as patriotic as other countries, a day like today is often seen as a day off and thats about it. I’ve heard it referred to as Invasion Day as well. Me, I can’t say that I’m very patriotic however I was when we lived overseas. Somehow Australia Day rose in significance for me then. In Africa we made Pavlova for our American friends and put up our Aussie flag and a few other things too. For some reason Aussie Day made us miss home and yet when we are here we have no real traditions that we follow as a family. Maybe I’ll have to start one next year.

Today I almost didn’t post a photo. We have visitors staying with us at the moment and it wasn’t until I was nearly ready to go to bed that I remembered! I’m trying hard not to miss a day so here’s today’s shot. She is almost out of the shot but for some reason I love this photo. I think I’m drawn to slightly strange pics!

This weekend has been about painting, getting the girls room set up a bit more and cleaning it out. Now, if I can just get rid of that ‘just painted’ smell!
