Painting Inspiration Needed

I would really like to start painting again. Before I start however I feel like a need some inspiration. One of the problems I have is canvas size, I can only really handle tiny canvases at the moment due to our house size and having a baby and 3 yr old around so the subject matter needs to be appropriate. In the past I’ve focused on topics such as portraiture, Africa, rocks and anything figurative but I’d love to start fresh. If you have any suggestions for where to find this inspiration from I’m all ears!

Here’s a few of my paintings from the last 10 years or so, showing the range of subject and medium. I have tried my hand at oil, pastel, acrylic, mixed media, goache and watercolour. I think I’m pretty much stuck on acrylics for now as they are the easiest for me to work with in my current environment;

The ABC’s of SIM Opportunities – E

I hadn’t forgotten about this little series, just hadn’t gotten around to moving to the letter ‘E’ until now so here goes. E is for things such as English teaching, ESL teaching, Economics, Evangelism and Epidemiologist. There are so many SIM opportunities in each category (except the last one, only one of those is currently needed) that I have decided to list the opportunities under job type rather than individually this time.

English Teachers (either teaching language or the subject) are needed in the following places;

Asia-Pacific
Mongolia
Paraguay
Sudan
Peru
Bolivia (ESL)
South Korea
Thailand
Ethiopia
Angola

Elementary (primary) school or other Educational opportunities can be found in;

Ethiopia and here also Economics Teacher
Niger
Peru
Pakistan
SIM International (in the USA)

Opportunities including Evangelism (and discipleship/church planting/Bible Teaching/Children’s Ministry) are needed in;

Ecuador
Mali
Namibia
Paraguay
Peru
Philippines
Singapore
Tanzania
Thailand

The last two ‘E’ opportunities are for:
An Epidemiologist in Angola
and
an ELWA Radio Administrative advisor in Liberia

I hope that you can find an opportunity to serve God in amongst all these ‘e-opportunities’. Don’t forget, the entire list of SIM needs can be found here.

Shorts

Been sewing again, this time I have done some more shorts but for my nephews Malachi and Ty. The pattern is very basic and I’m surprised I could do it so easily. Maybe its time to try something harder or maybe I’ll wait until the sleeplessness cloud lifts sometime this year. Anyway, it was very different for me to be using fabric that didn’t have butterflies, flowers or pink on it. The waist on the airplane shorts looks tight but its not, I just used really thin elastic. Its a learning curve for sure. I have a little dress cut out for Lucinda and if I get to sew it before she grows any bigger it will be the first thing I’ve sewn for her.

Malachi and Ty are arriving tonight from Brisbane (with their parents of course) so this Saturday we are having our third Christmas party of the season (and final!). These are under the tree for them.

Here they are!

Ali J Art

Ali J is someone I have gotten to know a little bit through our Etsy shops. She lives here in Perth and illustrates fashion portraits which are intriguing and beautiful and her work has appeared in many magazines and all over the internet. If you are after some unique prints or original artwork you should take a moment to browse through her online shop which can be found here (clicky here). She sells everything from cards to hair accessories to jewellery, all displaying her wonderful illustrations.

Please pop over to her shop, her website or take a browse of her blog as she could really do with a lift right now after some heartbreaking news.

L’s Felt Book – complete!

I have finally finished hand stitching L’s Felt Book. This is book number three for me and I have one to go. First I did one for K, then my gorgeous nephew Malachi and now L….your’s is coming Ty!

The challenge of coming up with different scenes to stitch that suit each of the kids has been fun. I just hope I can find some more ideas for Ty’s book. There are a few personal touches in this one, specifically with the Shana page, a tribute to our sausage dog who died only three years ago at the age of 15.

Here are the girls looking at their books this morning:

The last time I mentioned this on here I was starting with the cutting out and pinning down of each page. Last night I finished! Pulling out the final pin and putting the whole thing together is really satisfying after months of hand stitching. So, here it is!! I’m really excited to have it finished….now on to the next one!

The front and back pages have been deliberately left off the post.

17 Years

At midnight new years eve, 17 years ago Michael and I were at Adventure World. A group of churches had hired the place for the 1991/1992 New Years Eve celebrations and we went along. At approximately 2 seconds to midnight we agreed, while sitting on the now non-existent forts, that we would be boyfriend/girlfriend. That was at the start of year 12, the one year when I wasn’t meant to have such distractions as a boyfriend but it’s a good thing really, look how long it’s lasted! One year later we went off to Bible College in NSW together. We had actually applied separately to go and as we were trying to tell each other the bad news that we were each moving away, we discovered that we were moving to the same place. Within 2 years of that we were engaged and married about 18 months later. In 2009 we celebrate our 13th Wedding anniversary, how time flies.

Happy 17 years Michael. x .

For your entertainment, here’s some great shots of us from those days….aren’t we sweet!

Happy New Idea’s Year

So, firstly let me say happy new year to anyone reading this! 2008 was a completely crazy year for us. There were some very very good times and some very hard times. A quick summary of the year:

Jan – Started the year in a very hot Geelong, Victoria visiting my brother and family.
Feb – Michael went to Peru for three long weeks while a ‘starting to show’ pregnant me and K stayed home before we met him in Sydney.
March – Started house hunting, found the right house very quickly (mid March), just two weeks after Michael got back
April- May – Packing the house and also the SIM Get Together afternoon tea in May.
June – Moved into the new house, Mum and Dad came back to Perth.
July – L was born mid July
August – unpacking and getting used to a newborn being in the house again.
September – K turned 3
October – Michael went to the USA and Sydney, K, L, Mum and I went to Adelaide for my cousin’s wedding.
November – Go! Reachout Conference and my first two markets.
December – Christmas and finally a bit of normality.

What a crazy year. I’m really hoping that 2009 won’t be as crazy.

I have no resolutions at all. I am actually reasonably happy with my weight and most of the things I’d like to do or change relate to only ONE thing……the lack of sleep. My only aim for this year is to get L to sleep through. If I can get a proper night’s sleep then I will be able to change a lot of things. I have not had a full night’s sleep for 6 months now, that’s a long time to sleep in lots of 2 and 4 hours.

Finally the new ideas. I have new idea and direction for my shop, things I want to improve on and change but the only thing this has to do with a new year is the timing. I have been madly buying findings of all sorts, especially brass stampings and silver plated stampings and want to use them in a different way.

m_p1010027.jpg

m_p1010023.jpg

Here’s an example of what I’m aiming at, a more sophisticated line;

m_p1020299.jpg

m_p1020313.jpg

m_p1020307.jpg

m_p1010655.jpg

This was just the tiny bit that I managed to come up with in between the madness that is the festive season. I have a plan for much more including cufflinks, tea strainers, rings, necklaces and an array of non jewellery items as well as paintings and a better cafepress store.

Today I managed to sew up four pairs of shorts for my little nephews (who, along with their parents of course arrive in about 10 days time!) so I’m pleased about that and L’s felt book has just one page left before its done. Progress is slow but good. Have a happy new year everyone and for those who follow Jesus, I hope you grow in him more and more each day of 2009, like I said, progress for me (in this area) is slow but good. : )
