I thought I’d put up the next part of my booklet for you so here it is.

“Introduction

If we are unable to go to ‘the field’ (specifically focussing on the overseas field) then we can do many things to support and encourage missionaries. There are those of us who support them by sending money or praying regularly but there is much more we can do to ensure that they are encouraged from all sides. From my observations there are three major reasons why missionaries leave the field even after long-term ministry overseas. These include, medical reasons (such as malaria, allergies or childbirth), educational reasons (especially during or at the end of high school) and discourage-ment. In the areas of education and medical we are able to help through prayer and financial support, discouragement is another matter alto-gether.”

When I first returned from Niger in West Africa with SIM I felt drawn by the Lord to put together a booklet which would assist those of us here at home in encouraging and supporting missionaries in practical ways. I never did get the book published but I did get it mostly finished (called Curried Missionary - spicing up your missionary’s life).

I’ve decided to start putting helpful excerpts from the booklet on here about once a week, starting with the preface. I don’t proclaim to be all wise when it comes to this topic but I hope that my research and time will come of some good use.

“Preface

Although I am someone who has spent a “short” time ministering on foreign shores, I have experienced the loneliness of ministering in such an isolated place, of being so far from my friends, family and Church yet with little and sometimes no home contact.

Others of my fellow missionaries have often shared with me about this same loneliness that they too experienced. They desperately desired contact, help and encouragement from their supporters at home but receive very little.

It is because of this great lack that some longer term missionaries and myself have put this small booklet together and it is our hope that it will enthuse you to help carry the load.

As fellow believers you are partners in the mission of reaching the lost in “the uttermost parts”, and we pray you will come to the assistance of those who go for Christ’s sake and the Gospel.”

I’m still a supporter and follower of the situation with Schapelle Corby and have continued to write letters to her. I received one back about a month ago which was a photocopied letter with a personal handwritten note at the bottom. She didn’t have to do that but it was nice to know that she’s been getting my letters (along with thousands of others - according to her sister on the official site she got thousands of Christmas cards). There’s a new campaign to encourage Schapelle and even if you are unsure of her guilt or innocence this would be a wonderful opportunity to encourage someone.
The Foreign Prisoners Support Service have come up with a small printout we can use and write a note and and address on to send to her, just so she knows people haven’t forgotten her. It looks like the piccy here and the information and download for it can be found here.

Cos this is what’s in mine…………………my hubby thought this was funny, showing my perfectionistic streak when he opened the fridge tonight!

I now know where all my patience went to and why the jar was empty! It’s all gone on the hours of sitting with Kezi and soothing her to sleep or the times I wait for her to wake up for her feed so I can go to bed or the times when I have to stop in the middle of what I’m doing to meet her needs. Now that I’ve figured that out I don’t mind at all, she’s such a great bubba (but them I’m biased aren’t I!).

I put ‘arachnoid’ in the title because I really do have an irrational fear of spid…….you know. I valiantly defended my family tonight by killing (with spray, from a distance) one of those jumping spid………..you know. When I was a kid I was only mildly afraid of them and then when I was about 19 I had an awful spid…….you know experience.

I was sitting in the passenger seat of my friends car in her driveway when I put my hand on my lap and felt what I thought was a leaf. Wasnt. You guessed it. It was a spid……you know. It was as big as my hand and was one of those jumping ones. Scenario went like this. I screamed. She braked. She jumped out of her side of the car. I dived out of her side onto the driveway from the passengers side. I jumped up very quickly and turned in circles screaming ‘is it on me! is it on me?’. She laughed. The spid……you know was sitting on my seat staring at the commotion (laughing I’m sure in that deep evil laugh they have - don’t tell me you haven’t heard it). Her brother wouldn’t come out and kill it and when he finally did it had disapeared. It took a long time for me to get back in the car. See, my fear isn’t that irrational after all.

I think the Lord is trying to teach me patience. I’m sure of this because I went to get some from my ‘patience jar’ today and discovered that I’m scraping the bottom! The reason - we are waiting to set up an office here in WA for our new roles with our mission SIM. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) most of the staff over east seem to be on holidays so we have to be very patient and wait till they’ve all stopped having fun and relaxing before we can do the office. Perhaps they’ve got the right idea, relaxing. It’s something I don’t do well.

We need a lot of bits and pieces for this office. Things like a secondhand lounge setting, coffee table, bar fridge, microwave (wishlist that one!), office chairs, lockable filing cabinet and shelving and display racks. Perhaps the reason we can’t move on this is because the Lord has something better in mind. Anyway, tomorrow we’re going to the office and starting with what we’ve got - bug spray.

I think I’ll pray for a refill of my jar of patience tonight.
